6 Days, 6 provinces, 3800km. Currently at St.John’s, Newfoundland.

The trip started with lots of rain but for the past 2 days we have had good weather in Newfoundland.

Group shot at a mountain top. There were 5 icebergs floating so we each pointed to our favorite one! :P

Picturesque fishing villages along the coast.

Wildlife spotted so far: Moose, osprey, arctic hare, bald eagle, fox, some fluffy bird.

Stay tuned, and visit us at our TRIP BLOG!

A Week In Beantown

May 15, 2009

Time flies when you are having fun. I spent some time wandering around Boston in the wee hours and it had a very different feel compared, the street performers and crowd has disappeared, leaving the historic buildings behind.

Quincy Market, I got in trouble for ‘wandering’ in while they were cleaning…I didn’t know any better :P

The Rosebud Diner near Davis Square, Somerville. You can only get away with the intense pink neon lights with such a classic setup.

Running into a war veteran and chatting with him. Inside, the war has never really ended for him and substance abuse is one way for him to get away.

I didn’t expect to do much at the Aquarium initially but turned out there was a little of different stuff going on. It was really neat working alongside the biologist and trainers that oversee the well-being of the animals.

I spent a morning with the group that maintains the large area for the penguin exhibit. Here they are feeding them fish and logging them so they don’t get overweight.

Rockhopper Penguin African penguin moulting (changing fur)

Me in a wetsuit for the morning. The penguins knew I was new so were poking at me curiously.

There are always lots happening the Giant Ocean Tank…

This cownose ray is fast swimming bugger!

In the Animal Medical Center they were doing a check-up on recovering stranded sea turtles.

Whale watching, this time we spotted 2 humpback whales logging near the surface. The size of these animals are just baffling!

Tomorrow I will be starting a 2-week roadtrip with Anthony, John, and Ludwik. Just putting us in a van would be an experience by itself, with insults flying everywhere. We have started a blog, Engineering East Coast Expedition, for updates along the way, see you there!

Nights Filled with Longer Hours

May 7, 2009

I am in Boston this week visit fellow Azure Dynamics co-workers as well as doing some photoshoot for the New England Aquarium.
I think the feeling of being done school has finally sunk in.

This animation was taken from Brian’s balcony near Yonge & Bloor. Lens used was a lensbaby with a home-made spiral aperture.

If the animation is slow please let it load for a minute. If you do not see the animation please click HERE.

With help from Mike Purvis, new addition of the category section should further enhance your browsing experience.

Backpacking in Tobermory, Bruce Peninsula

May 1, 2009

This past weekend I went with Horace, Aaron, and Rishi for a short backpacking trip along the Bruce Trail near Tobermory. We were pretty restless from an entire winter or indoor activity that we bushed aside the ‘potential’ thunderstorm and rain from the weather forecast…

The start of the trail was relatively easy. We were in high spirit and making good time. However, many things brought back memories from hiking in Algonquin Park several years ago. The spring run-off, the flooding of the lowlands, the snow/ice patches in shaded areas…

We took a lunch break and heard the rumbling of thunder moving toward us. This is the last picture in which we were dry for the next 2 days.

Rishi (Jamal) had to stash some dry cloths into the pack while Aaron (One-ball) looked away.

We were still about 6hrs away from our campsite so we had to speed up while not risking injuries.

Originally, the trail is bumping and slipping with the moss on the rocks. Add on some rain and it was just dangerous. Here Horace had to use his rock climbing skills to conquer the steep rock face.

We got to the campsite at 7pm, we had less than 45minutes of sunlight to setup camp, cook, and get ready for darkness.

The next day, the toughest part was getting out of the damp sleeping bag to put on wet socks and shoes. The hot oatmeal was so very delicious.

The weather was 2DegC, windy and drizzling continuously….it was impossible to keep anything dry. We were protected from the wind by the trees but the terrain was also more difficult.

Our lunch break…our hands were so cold it took two people to open ziploc bags. We had to keep moving in order to stay warm.

The last 100m of the hike involved us trekking across a series of smooth, slanted rock while the waves were trying to sweep us away. I had to focus so hard on staying alive I didn’t even take a picture.

Every time I go camping I come to appreciate the comforts of our daily lives. Things like dry shelter, hot shower, dry socks are quite luxurious when out in the open. Great trip though!
